Birds > Charadriiformes > Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago

info

For a few months (08/13) I have not presented any worthy news. The more satisfaction brought me being on the lookout in wet meadows where you could get the impression of finding yourself in another, more beautiful reality, needless to say about pictures. The marshy meadow surrounded by arable fields look ordinarily, as usual. But several minutes after camouflaging in lying position, you can see the views unavailable without masking. Wagtails, plovers, wood sandpiper or swallows can be seen on a small patch of the marshy meadow every now and then. These species could be shot quite easy, but the most fun of the trip is when you return with photos of the new species, and their amount is big enough to build a new gallery which you can publish on the page "news". So I do not have to explain the joy that gave me two snipes feeding just to the left of the lens, which I watched for the first time. Many times I admired other people's pictures of these waders, but only observation on my own made me realize their filigree size. Snipe’s weight does not exceed 180 grams, with a wingspan of about 40 centimeters. Like the majority of birds of that size they are very skittish and timid. A harrier flying near the marsh always made the snipe stop preying and sat still on the ground watching the predator flying patrol flight. It’s long beak very efficiently penetrated muddy and richly irrigated meadow, picking something nutritious out of it every now and again. For some time I have recorded voices of birds, but unfortunately this time, although snipes took their wings several times I failed to record the sound. There was another problem when trying to record, the background of these recordings, in fact the noise of two tractors working round there. Too bad, because their name is derived from the sound they give out. Thus, it is something to work on to compliment the gallery with the sounds of the bird recorded on my own.
Last minute news 06/2014 – Iceland
There was a large number of common snipes in Iceland too. Often, especially in the morning, they would sit on the roadside fence posts. I could take some photos from the car, but very often, after a while, they would fly away so far from me that the encounter was actually over. An interesting blurry background let me introduce new photos to the gallery, but there’s also another reason why I’ll remember snipes. They would often fly around making their distinctive sound. A number of times, while I was trying to record the sounds of other birds, they hindered me and I had to wait for them to fly away. The change in the gallery of the common snipe is substantial. Although all the pictures were taken without camouflage, the distance from which they were taken was significantly smaller, not to mention the quite intriguing morning lighting. It was difficult to get  dynamic shots of the bird due to its  size and flight speed.

Never had I been so close to the common snipe. Even in Iceland, where it belongs to quite common species. The snipe would seek food just a few meters away from the hide, so the photos are framed only just a little bit. The gallery has been refreshed to a certain extent, which is worth recording.  On the same day  I took some pictures of the common sandpiper, the little range plover and the water rail.

When I was waiting on the pectroral sandpiper  created several pictures of common snipes. The gallery as rebuilt.
