Birds > Passerine > Siberian Rubythroat Calliope calliope

info

It occurs in central and eastern parts of Asia. It winters in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam and Philippines. Therefore the recent observation of this bird in the Netherlands is sensational as the bird must have flown several thousand kilometers from its natural habitat in Asia west instead of flying south to its natural winter habitat in southern Asia. During this time we had plenty of Siberian rubythroats „at hand” in northern part of Thailand. We photographed them from a distance of several meters without camouflage. It would be good to have the sound of this bird recorded, but unfortunately the bird remained silent, most probably one can hear it during its mating season. It is a little smaller than a sparrow. The weight of its body does not exceed 30 grams with a wingspan of 25 cm.
Last minute news-06/2016 Mongolia
Well, after photographing the Siberian rubythroat from such a small distance as in Thailand, it was difficult in Mongolia to take better pictures, as the bird was very secretive. Therefore the gallery hasn’t been changed. But this time, the bird made some sounds, which it didn’t do in Thailand. I managed to record its voice, which I uploaded in its gallery on my website.
