Birds > Passerine > European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis

info

How beautiful and colorful bird a European Goldfinch is. Despite its occurance in Poland during a year, it is difficult to admire, because of the fact that it is too timid and dynamic. When in herds, European Goldfinches immediately start to fly, just to sit nearby in a moment. Unfortunately, the charm and colors of this bird can be admired only from a close distance, because of its size. It is a little bit smaller than a sparrow. It weighs a dozen grams, with a wingspan around 20 cm.

As it was said in my first comment these birds seem to be the most beautiful while flying.  They show its all colors giving a beautiful, colorful spectacle, especially while flying in a flock. Taking such photos is a real challenge. Goldfinch is half of a sparrow in size, it is much more dynamic and definitely more skittish. They move so quickly and across such areas that keeping a lookout for them is probably useless. One have to go out in the field and look for the places they visit frequently and hide there. But is it possible to take dynamic images of the flock in this way? Pictures of goldfinches added in September 2013 were taken at a much shorter distance, and therefore I have portraits of goldfinches, but unfortunately not in mating colors. The picture of the goldfinch on a fence taken  in May shows the beauty of the bird in the most realistic way. Autumn colors of the plumage of birds are rarely as impressive as in the spring, during the mating season . However, added photos significantly enriched and varied my gallery, although it is not the quality that I would like to achieve, yet.

So far not much satisfaction from my side from the photographs of this species taken in Poland. They have more documentary value, which is a pity as the bird is beautiful and colorful. In New Zealand I managed to observe it too, but neither the quantity nor the quality of these pictures is impressing. Nevertheless I added a few photos of this bird. European goldfinches were reintroduced in New Zealand in 1860 And as you can see, they are doing fine there.

In an unlikely place, by the busy road, on the apple tree, I managed to take a few photos of the family of goldfinches. Family - as there were adult animals and their this year offspring. Birds seemed preoccupied with the presence of a cat and they gave sounds which I managed to record. It is a pity that the recording was distorted by the noise made by cars passing and the children playing football on the field nearby. After a fairly arduous work on the soundtrack I managed to select the sound of birds. So here we have sounds of goldfinches recorded on my own and some new pictures added to the gallery.
Last minute - Turkey - 2 - 09/2014.
If I had had more time, how beautiful pictures of goldfinch in stony-savannah environment would have been taken. The dried bushes, rocks in different colors and the beautiful multi-colored bird. Well, you cannot do everything and not always the time you have is sufficient. But I managed to add a few pictures of goldfinches taken in Turkey.

The photos uploaded recently might not be of the expected quality yet but I redecorated the gallery as I managed to take some more interesting pictures of goldfinches.

Twice I tried to make photo sessions in the frosty mornings which resulted in shooting a European goldfinches. Each of these two days, despite the multi-layered clothes, I had the strength and endurance to sit less than three hours. Sitting there in dozen-degree frost without moving was impossible for a longer time. Changes occurred in the gallery and new photos are presented.

Taking photos of red kites at the Gigrin Farm takes place in the afternoon. Fortunately, there was a bird feeder on the farm, where one could spend a few hours from the early morning and photograph minor birds. Among the birds that came to the feeder, or to nearby areas, there were also goldfinches. A few photos have been taken which should be added to the gallery, and the gallery has been rebuilt.
