Birds > Passerine > The common chaffinch Fringilla coelebs

info

The common chaffinch is a quite grateful object for shooting, especially beautiful males. Although it is a very common bird in Poland, I managed to take a good photograph only when I was hidden in the tent – look-out. The common chaffinch is very cautious and tiny, so only photographing from 6-7 meters gives satisfactory results. It can be compared to the size of a sparrow. Its weight is slightly smaller than the weight of a sparrow, and it has a wingspan of less than 30 centimeters. When being in forest one can hear quite characteristic and beautiful trill of the common chaffinch, which together with oriole and cuckoo sounds, is the summer essence of Polish forests. Once when I was in a forest I saw an oriole which was following cuckoo and constantly attacking it. What is worth mentioning is that the oriole is almost five times lighter than the cuckoo. I think that the oriole was familiar with cuckoo habits and that is why it chased it around.

We managed to take a few, so far the best, pictures of this bird, which radically changed the existing gallery.

In Zakopane it is so easy to take pictures of common chaffinches. When I think of it looking at pictures of this bird the second similar place is a seaside promenade in Kolobrzeg. Chaffinches were sometimes at a distance of 1-2 meters from people. I have added a few pictures taken there.

After finishing a photography session with the great reed warbler and the Eurasian reed warbler I managed to take several interesting photos of the common finch. It was the reason for remodeling the gallery.

I added a few photos of finches taken in Tenerife. The bird is neither typically plumaged, like our finches, nor is it the Tenerife teydefinch.
