Birds > Passerine > Firecrest Regulus ignicapilla

info

My impressions of firecrests are similar to those of goldcrests. I truly encourage you to read the text about goldcrests too. I pointed out the physical differences between these two species as well as the fact that firecrests leave our country during the winter, wintering is southern Europe or North Africa. What is interesting is the fact that both species lay up to 10 eggs per clutch, which weight exceed the weight of their bodies and it amounts about 5 -6 grams. Firecrests often build their nests in the lower parts of trees and bushes in opposite to Goldcrests which build their nests even at the height of several meters. From my multiple approaches to photograph these species it seems that in Poland there are far less firecrests than goldcrests, even though firecrests have a much better and more comfortable living conditions. I would recommend this lovely “baby” as an object to photograph. However, remember that when photographing nature you need to have a real patience and do not get discouraged by the majority of unsuccessful photographs. Taking photographs of an active firecrest is very difficult due to the lack of sufficient light conditions, even on a sunny day. In the lower part of bushy spruce, there isn’t enough light to take a satisfying photos. When I set autofocus and the shutter is released I have a beautifully photographed firecrest or goldcrest sitting on a spruce branch.

Finally, I have added new pictures of a firecrest, as for years I have had no occasion to devote some time to this species. Quite unexpectedly while walking in the city park my attention was attracted by firecrests fighting fiercely against each other. On the right side there was definitely a better light and I decided to spend some time in this place with hope for a close encounter with the birds. And it happened! The firecrest appeared several times in front of the lens but I had to decide not to use the camera converter, because the autofocus could not keep up with the bird swiftly jumping around branches. These a few photos, probably my best ones so far, have enriched and changed the gallery of this species.

Kris - thanks for inviting me to such a photo session in which I have not participated yet. In fact, it was a social gathering during which photos of the European Pied Flycatcher and the Firecrest were taken. The European Pied Flycatcher was a few meters away from us, occupied the nesting box. It sang beautifully throughout the day to the hosts and every now and then appeared on her favorite twigs. It just took a little patience, moving the equipment - without masking, I could take the best my photos of my Pied Flycatcher so far. The gallery has been radically rebuilt and changed its status to very good. It was similar with the Firecrest on that day. The Firecrest must have had a nest somewhere nearby, because he was collecting insects intensively, appearing every now and then on a nearby spruce. Taking pictures was also not a problem. During this session, so many interesting photos were taken that both galleries are included in the news, and this news is combined for both galleries. I hope there might be more such nice days!
