Birds > Piciformes > Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major

info

It is perhaps the most commonly occurring woodpecker in our country. It can be found everywhere, from city parks to all kinds of forests. It is easy to photograph, but unfortunately it is rarely seen in lower parts of the forest, so lenses with bigger focal lengths are welcome. The bird will especially give us quite a lot of time if we find it pecking at a cone, stuck in a tree hole, for seeds. This activity absorbs it to such an extent that if we are quiet, such a photo session can last even a dozen-plus minutes. Although its name could suggest that it’s big, it is, in fact, a medium-sized bird. Its weight is about 80 g, with a wingspan of around 40 cm. It is surely larger than the species similar to it, the middle spotted woodpecker or the lesser spotted woodpecker.

Great spotted woodpecker is probably the most frequently found woodpecker in our country. Taking photos of him from a distance is not difficult, but there is a problem when you want to take close-up, simply anatomical pictures. Then woodpeckers are not so trusting and friendly and fly away to a safe distance. In fact, I was camouflaged waiting for beaver family, hoping to photograph the black woodpecker. During the last lookout I could take a few pictures of black woodpeckers and record their sounds. This time my camouflage was much better but the effects were in inverse proportion to the efforts I devoted to hide myself. Not only I failed to shoot the beaver, bat also the black woodpecker which flew up several times did not sat in my field of vision for any moment. However there was not complete failure, as a consolation prize tits and great spotted woodpecker appeared. It sat a few meters in front of my shelter in a birch, and quietly picked insects. It was a pity that it sat relatively high, because shooting up is not my favorite position to photograph , not to mention the perception of such images. Nevertheless, it was fortunate that it appeared, as these are probably my best photos of great spotted woodpecker, or maybe it's just the excitement and joy of the newly captured images?

The photos of great spotted woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker and grey-headed woodpecker previously were taken by chance in the parks during random encounters with these birds. This time I was in a well-organized lookouts, where just those listed species of woodpeckers appeared at the feeders, regardless of other passerines. Quality of the new pictures is much better and the gallery of these birds on my website has been rebuilt. Unfortunately there was no white-backed woodpecker which I really counted on. This note is common for the three species of woodpeckers and the great and middle spotted woodpeckers go to the news.

Just like with the middle spotted woodpecker, in February 2018 at the feeder I had the opportunity to improve my gallery of the great spotted woodpecker. I took so many more interesting photos that the gallery was rebuilt.

The autumn meetings at the birds-feeder hut also resulted in adding a few photos of the Great Spotted Woodpecker to it gallery. This time, quite dynamic pictures.
