Birds > Piciformes > Middle Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos medium

info

Yet again, the name of the woodpecker corresponds with its size. The weight of the middle spotted woodpecker is about 70 g, with a wingspan of approximately 35 centimeters. It is indeed just a little smaller than the great spotted woodpecker, and these two species are, at least at first glance, difficult to tell apart, at least by their back. The most visible difference can be noticed on their bellies. The great woodpecker’s belly is white, and the middle woodpecker’s belly is covered with oblong stripes, passing from pink to red on the tail. In fact only when you zoom it in, you are able to tell the difference. Observing the bird from a perspective does not give you such a possibility.

The photos of great spotted woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker and grey-headed woodpecker previously were taken by chance in the parks during random encounters with these birds. This time I was in a well-organized lookouts, where just those listed species of woodpeckers appeared at the feeders, regardless of other passerines. Quality of the new pictures is much better and the gallery of these birds on my website has been rebuilt. Unfortunately there was no white-backed woodpecker which I really counted on. This note is common for the three species of woodpeckers and the great and middle spotted woodpeckers go to the news.

I added the voice of Middle spotted woodpecker.

Unquestionably, my most interesting photos of the middle spotted woodpecker were created (see European greenfinch information 02/2018). The gallery was rebuilt.

Gallery improvement continues. I swapped several photos taken in autumn colors.
