Birds > Passerine > Rook Corvus frugilegus

info

Apart from sparrows and western jackdaws, the rook is the bird that is most commonly found in the urban environment. Although flocks of rooks flying across the sky in autumn do not boost one’s mood, a good close-up photo gives you a lot of satisfaction. The rook, like the raven, is not as easy an object to photograph as it may seem. Although its availability is not a problem, it’s the lighting conditions that will decide about your satisfaction. In full midday sunlight we will rather take the bird’s black contour, than manage to capture its charm, glittering with iridescent green, navy blue, and maybe violet too. Only the subdued daylight or delicate sunlight rising from behind the clouds can create conditions for taking a satisfactory photo. You will experience the same problem with ravens and other similarly colored birds. In terms of its size, the rook is quite a large bird, as its weight is about 0.5 kilogram, with a wingspan of around one meter. Watching rooks you will often observe their weakness for walnuts. They can devote a lot of time to excavating the delicious inside of a walnut, often using the hard surface of a road or pavement at which they throw the nut, hoping that it crashes.
Last-minute news - 03/2015
I uploaded a few interesting pictures of rooks and remodeled the gallery. Let’s hope that the next change within this gallery will be about the rook’s sounds, which I completely missed this time, but which should not be a problem in the future.
Last minute news - 11/2018
I added a recording of the voice of rooks. The recording was made on Gigrin Farm, before photo shooting red kites.
Lasty minute news-11/2019
On a cloudy day in the city park there was an opportunity to take some better photos of the rook. Successful, subdued photos of the rook in the colors of autumn are a great satisfaction - the rook gallery goes to the news and receives the status of very good.
Last minute news-12/2020
After another visit to the park in Łazienki in Warsaw, the gallery was rebuilt. See "Last minute news 12/2020 - Hooded Crow". Some more interesting photos were made, showing the actual color of the rook. At first glance, especially in strong contrasting light, it is black. Soft subdued light reveals the charm of this bird. The light was indeed perfect on that day ...
