info

While I was taking photos in a small garden with a little pond in the middle, a friendly owner of the property asked if I would like to photograph a basilisk. A rhetorical question, I thought. The basilisk was sitting still, 2-3 meters over our heads. It was lured to the ground with a cricket, as I suppose. The insect, slowly placed on a path crossing a thicket, invigorated the reptile so that it was down on the ground by its prey within seconds. The light contrasts were too big, but the reptile was incredible. It can reach up to 90 cm in length. It occurs in Central America from Honduras to Panama. The basilisk is also known as Jesus’ lizard, as it can use surface tension and its ability to take very quick steps to move on the surface of water.
