Birds > Piciformes > Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides tridactylus

info

Finally, there is something new in the gallery presenting the woodpecker family – Three-toed Woodpecker. It is a thing of rarity in Poland. I have never come across this bird in Poland. It inhabits boreal forests dominated by coniferous trees, especially dying coniferous trees. We encountered in such a forest. The old forest was beautiful with the brushwood of moss and lichen and with hills and knolls. There were not many Woodpeckers. After a long marsh and intense observation, we managed to spot just one. It was female. It was seated too high in a tree, but I took a few photos that begin the gallery of the Three-toed Woodpecker. I wish I had taken more photos highlighting the yellow cap at the top of this Woodpecker’s head, which is the most characteristic feature of this species. This is just a beginning of the gallery. This Woodpecker is of rather minute posture, weighing about 60 grams and having the wingspan of about 13 cm.
Last minute news 04/2016
It took two years before I could make changes in the gallery of three-toed woodpecker. The previous documentary photo gallery has been replaced with better photographs. This time the pictures were taken in the vicinity of Białowieża.  There were a lot of woodpeckers, but quite high off the ground, and their really dynamic behavior was not conducive to taking more images. Such changes in the gallery need to be noted as the news on my website.
