info

Pictures of the Wood Duck that are published here were taken in a park in Warsaw's Łazienki (Royal Baths). Searching for the duck on our water bodies is useless. Nonfreezing water in winter, sense of security and the fact that people like to fatten birds in the park are conducive to the occurrence of such "misfits" of our fauna as the Wood Duck or the Mandarin Duck. They probably escaped from some breeding farm. The Carolina Duck in nature is found only in North America. It is close to the Mandarin Duck in size, in which company it lives in Łazienki. Wingspan is about 70 cm with a weight of about 0.6 kg. Not only the physical features but also the habits of those species are similar, not to mention the beautiful coloration of males. Wood Ducks incubate eggs in a nest located on a tree. The one-day juveniles must sometimes make a jump from a height of several meters to reach the water body, where they find the first meal. We'll see in time if they assimilate enough to reproduce there in Warsaw’s Royal Bath. I could see one couple there. Conditions in our country seem to be comfortable for the Mandarin Duck, at least in Warsaw, because their population is growing (see also the “last minute news 10/2013”  the Mandarin Duck ). What about  Wood Ducks? We'll see, anyway I’ll check it when occurs the opportunity to walk around this beautiful park.
