Birds > Passerine > Oriole Oriolus oriolus

info

It is a bird which I will be referring to many times if it lets me of course. It is hard to photograph an oriole, because its favorite places are crowns of the tress and it can be spotted in Poland only from May to September. My dream is to take a photo of a female and a male together. A yellow-black male and an olive-grey female would be a great matching. A trill of a male oriole is music to my ears. Often heard in the woods, also in Polish communist films scenes recorded in the forest the orioles singing in the background, but most of people do not know that it was that bird. While sitting in the look-out, its voice whiles away the hours without making you feel bored or irritated while waiting, compared with the sound of the Savi's Warbler. It is a bit easier to photograph them in May, in a time when males compete for females jumping from branch to branch, when they can be easily approached and photographed. Orioles’ wingspan is less than 0.5 meters, with a body weight of about 75 grams. They are reserved and difficult birds to observe. The only useful facilitation is that when males sing their song, they sit quite still in the crown of the trees. When we hear it, slowly moving towards the sound, maybe we will find a line of eye contact with a beautiful male, sitting among the trees heavily overgrown with fresh leaves (May / June). Note that using focal length is more than welcome and the photographs taken from the bottom will not be the apogee of joy and contentment. But you have to start with something…
