It makes an incredible impression as this 30-kilogram heavy, 2,5-meter long water monitor slowly passes by a dozen or so meters from us. We had to step back to a certain extent in order to be able to see the whole silhouette of the monitor in telephoto lens. The pictures were taken, as usually for me in case of reptiles, just by the way. We were taking photos of common stilts, red-wattled lapwings, kingfishers and Chinese pond herons near mangroves, when we noticed a huge monitor on a dam dividing two water reservoirs. We approached the place where the monitor had just disappeared below the water surface and it occurred that there were more of them. They were not as large as the one a while before but huge when compared with our lizards and we always kept a safe distance from them. Luckily their considerable size and telephoto lens gave such an opportunity without losing the quality of pictures. They behaved peacefully while they were photographed but they disappeared below the water surface every now and then.
Last minute news - Bangkok - 08/2019
It wasn’t another “bird” trip, but no opportunity should be missed to photograph new species or to make the current galleries better, especially since everything is exotic just like Bangkok from the perspective of Poland. I didn't take my basic lens (600) to photograph birds, but the lens I took (100-400) was enough to improve some galleries and create 5 new ones. The new bird galleries would look much better, if the photos were taken with prime lens. All in all I have some pictures for the new galleries. Bangkok is a very crowded place, so the opportunity to photograph birds was limited to city parks. Such species as Mynas, Large-billed Crows, Striated Herons, Little Egrets could be photographed without any problem. However, these were Water Monitors what made the biggest impression on me and this is why the introduction is associated with their gallery, not the bird gallery as usually. In Bangkok it’s quite shocking that in city parks you can stay in close distance (few meters) to over 1 meter long Water Monitors. They can play a role of cleaners, as I could see them eat fish skeletons. There were plenty of them. It helped me to enrich the gallery with new pictures. They seemed not to be bothered by all day long city noises. I could watch them in different sizes and different situations as their mating rituals. In Lumpini Park you can rent a pedal boat what is very helpful when photographing Monitors. Thanks to my daughter, who perfectly drove our pedalo, I took the best photos of Striated Herons. In this place birds were used to human. Thanks to that I could approach them at a distance of a few meters. The distance was very important because of the size of Striated Heron. It weighs about 200 gram, so it is 10 times smaller than our Grey Heron. That is how new pictures of my gallery, so far documentary, were created. With Little Egretts wasn’t that easy, because of their snow white colour, but I also managed to add some new pictures. In the city and in parks the most common species was Common Myna. Everywhere there could be seen signs of assimilation of birds to city conditions. I saw a nest of Scaly-breasted Munia in a shrub surrounding a hotel smoking spot. People who went for cigarette didn't notice that at a distance of 30 centimeters from their head Scaly-breasted Munia breeds its eggs. It's a pity that I won’t know if it managed to lead the cubs out of the nest in such a specific place…
