Birds > Owls > Tawny Owl Strix Aluco

info

I have taken the first picture thanks to the small rain and my determination. Despite poor aura I was strolling through a pine forest with a modest amount of leaved trees. Thanks to a drizzle the bedding was wet enough that, while walking through the forest, the sound of cracking leaves and needles could not be heard. Walking calmly I was closely watching the trees, when suddenly I spotted unnatural bump on one of them. When I approached it it turned out to be an owl, Twany Owl to be exact, first one I saw in its natural habitat. I calmly set the lense, took couple of pictures and waited for it to move its head to get a portrait. Surely, some rodent in the bedding draw her attention so I had more time to set the exposition for the picture. Unfortunately, after turning its head, eye contact lasted only for couple of seconds before the Twany Owl slided from the branch, it was sitting on, and noiselessly flew away maneuvering in the thicket of the forest. Couple of seconds and a beautiful impression for life. Tawny Owl is our most popular owl. Its weight reaches around 0.5 kilogram with a wingspan of around 1 meter.

One little tip and in the middle of a village, in a small park, you could observe young Tawny Owls. It is getting harder to spot them because of the growing leaves, and setting yourself with the gear is pure acrobatics. Young Tawny Owls leave the nest/hollow very early and then sit on nearby branches for couple of weeks, where, with a bit of luck they get to grow to a full size specimen. It often happens that it is hard for them to sit in one place as they twist and turn and fall off trees. As younglings they are covered with a fluff protecting them from cold and unable them to fly. If, using claws and sharp beak, they climb back onto safe height (and it is not easy for them), they will manage their first flight, unless they become a prey to some other predator. Photographing young Tawny Owls from the ground, spontaneously, you had a strange feeling of being watched by them. Tawny Owls would sit high on trees and calmly look down with curiosity. It’s a shame I could not spot the parents anywhere near. They would enrich my, very modest so far, gallery of Tawny Owls.

I have added my own recording of its voice. In Białowieża it was no problem recording the sound of the tawny owl in the park situated nearby the hotel I stayed in.

This gallery was created step by step over the years. This time a tawny owl posed in a park in Poznań, paying no attention to walkers passing by. I have added a few photos as pictures of owls do not happen so often and I hope I will have an opportunity to take more.

The history of building this gallery is similar to that of the sparrowhawk. From time to time it is possible to take a single photo of this bird. In the municipal park in Łazienki, he was sitting in a hollow in a tree. A meeting with an owl must always be noted in the information, but changes are too small for the owl to be included in the news.

Finally, a collection of random photos taken in parks is replaced by a much more interesting collection of tawny owl photos. This time the session was no accident. Jurek thanks for inviting me to a rather amazing place. A small cluster of trees, mainly oaks took a liking to tawny owls. Owls in this small forest make their presence known every now and then, but they are active at night. Fortunately, an hour or two before nightfall, the owls started their activity. This was already enough to take photos. And it wasn't easy, because it was quite dark in the forest and the owls' flights, not signalled by anything, were silent, and short. But in the end, there is reason to be pleased, because the changes in the gallery are huge, and this must be noted in the news and the status of the gallery changed to very good. Jurek, thanks again for this tawny weekend!
