info

Which photographer does not dream of taking a picture of a Sunbittern and, of course, in flight, uniquely from behind a flying bird. The Sunbittern is found from southern Mexico, south to the northern part of Bolivia in South America. We tried to find it in Costa Rica, but were unsuccessful. The bird inhabits tropical forests and is quite small, weighing no more than 300 grams. These are two of the difficulties to have any photo of a Sunbittern at all, but not yet the most important in showing all the beauty and charm of this bird. A foraging bird, it is quite inconspicuous, not in any way so special as to favour it over other more spectacular species to photograph. It is only in flight that the Sunbittern, when observed from behind, dazzles with its feathery, colourful ornamentation. The encounter with the sunfish took several seconds, but this time it was successful. We were travelling by boat along the Napo River in the Amazon basin. Suddenly, we saw a sunfish on our right on a log. The result was the first photo of a sunflower standing on a fallen tree trunk. We were slowly approaching it when it suddenly flew off a few tens of metres away and hid in the shrubs growing on the bank. The boat is a rather unstable place to take dynamic photos without a tripod of a departing bird. However, from the whole series, which was created in the second the bird flew away, a few of them are sharp and I was able to finally create the gallery of the sunbird, so long awaited by me. It is not an elaborate gallery, but it contains that one, very difficult to take photo - of the sunbird in flight showing all the beauty and difference of this species of bird from other birds.
