Birds > Passerine > Willow Tit Poecile montanus

info

Distinguishing Marsh Tit from a Willow Tit, at least for me, is quite a challenge. I have read the literature and carefully studied the pictures. I assume that I did it well, though I am not sure. There is practically no difference in size nor looks. Weight of both species is around dozen or so grams with a wingspan not exceeding 20 centimeters. I have not found nor observed differences worth mentioning, that is why I have decided that the comments on both of them will be the same.

The previous winter outdoor pictures of  the Willow Tit  are supplemented by photographs of the spring " session " of the species. Unfortunately, the Willow Tit honored me for a moment, but there are definitely more interesting pictures than before. The process of perfecting the presentation of this species is continuing.

When I was waiting for deers and wild boars, tits and long-tailed bushtit appeared behind my back. Unfortunately, with the Long-tailed Bushtit it didn’t go so well as with willow tits, but I managed to take some pictures to enrich my photo gallery.

This time I had no dilemmas with the identification of tits. In the far north, in Finland, where we photographed the northern lights (aurora borealis), marsh tits did not occur so they must have been willow tits. But, despite the strong frost they were still quite skittish. Only a few photos were created which initiated changes in the gallery. My previous dozen-photo gallery had to be limited for simple reason: what once could be published on my website today seems to be of an unacceptable quality. My approach to what can be posted on the site changes. When looking at the few photos that currently go to the site my conclusion is – the willow tit’s gallery must start again with new photos. Well, we'll see when the best time for that comes, because there are so many galleries that need improvement, and the last contact with these tits was 4 years ago...

This year, a lot of photos of different species of birds have been taken around my house. Willow Tits is one of them, as they have nested in an old birch. It is interesting that in winter I didn’t  see them at the feeder, and in spring they bred in the garden. The resulting photos added variety to the modest gallery of the Willow Tit on my website.
