I have stopped counting how many times I was going out to the beach at sunrise in the hope of meeting a bar-tailed godwit. Although it is considered to be common species in Poland, still it is needed to be lucky to photograph it. Of course, taking pictures of this bird in Poland can be possible only when the birds are migrating, in our country it happens in April/May and August/October. There were really several reasons why I wanted to have my own pictures of a bar-tailed godwit. The two of them are its charm and my fascination with this tireless traveler. Tireless, as it holds an official record of the length of uninterrupted bird flight - 8 days and five hours. That much time it took the bar-tailed godwit female to cover a distance of 11.680 km. Well, I cannot help admiring this inconspicuous bird! The weight of the bar-tailed godwit is from 200 to 600 grams. The Earth is not too big for this bird to fly around when it can accomplish such passage. The third reason is that it belongs to the fauna of Poland. If it happens to you that you have the chance to observe the bar-tailed godwit, you can easily take photos, such as those presented, lying peacefully on the beach without any camouflage. The bar-tailed godwit, of course, keeps a distance of a few meters, but it is already enough for taking pictures. The bird when looking for food thoroughly penetrates the coastal bottom with its long beak, dipping into the water every so often. It is so busy that can sometimes get very close. So close that it not always fits in the camera's frame. Several not so short meetings with the bar-tailed godwit ended with the creation of photos for my gallery of this species. Finally!!!
Last minute news - 09/2019
My next contact with the Bar-tailed godwit, also in Mikoszewo, ended in taking better pictures. The gallery seems to be a bit monotonous, but in the case of this bird, probably, it must be like that. Well, photos taken on flights in Poland.
Last minute news- 09/2020 Heligoland – Germany
We do not know the day or time in nature photography when it is possible to improve the current photographic output of a given species. Once so awaited, today I finally felt for myself that it is a species that is commonly found. Once I counted 24 individuals on the beach. This time, so much more interesting photos were taken that the gallery has become varied, more interesting, it is included in the news and added to the gallery of favorites. It was not so easy to record the sound. The barbres usually started to fly and a strong gust of wind disturbed the recording of good quality soundtrack. The old achievements go to the archives, and the gallery with such interesting content is so interesting that I will probably come back to it more than once.
