I managed to take pictures of the Black-legged Kittiwake a few times and in a fairly large colonies. It occurs commonly in Iceland. Its wingspan is of about one meter and it weighs about a half kilogram. While watching the colony it was not difficult to record a voice of a kittiwake, actually the sounds of a colony. When you look at the kittiwakes’ nests situated on rocky cliffs, it is hard to believe that the chicks are to survive in that difficult, windy conditions to the age when they are self-sufficient. Safe cliff gives a shelter against predators, but on the other hand, there is the danger of the fall from dozens of meters. Such colonies as in case of Kittiwake, give an idea of the richness of the ocean. There are thousands of birds, or maybe it should be said millions in case of Iceland, for which the ocean is the place of feeding. I watched the birds returning with the food that they brought to the nest. Clamor, commotion, confusion - just the bird colony.

I have uploaded some photos of the black-legged kittiwake in the gallery of this species. Black-legged kittiwakes weren’t difficult to encounter, especially on the fjords. Sometimes they would build their nests on coastal fortifications and on nearby rocks, so one could actually approach them at a distance of several meters.

At Svalbard, it was probably the bird we saw the most often during our stay. And that it is not possible to miss any opportunity to take photos that can be more interesting than previously posted in the gallery, I followed the temptation. And I succeeded - a large group of black-legged kittiwakes accompanied the whale while feeding. We managed to photograph hunting for krill and other small fish. A few interesting photos go to the gallery. The black-legged kittiwakes accompanied us during our voyage in the coastal waters of Spitsbergen. It was almost always possible to count on them, like fulmars. In the place where freshwater from the glacier flows into the sea, hundreds of these birds could be seen. Unfortunately, among them there was not even one ivory gull... I have changed the sound, the previous one recorded in a colony of murres and gulls for the sound of black-legged kittiwakes in the Longyearbyen port basin.
