Last minute news-01-2025-Mexico
The gallery of the Plain Chachalaca had so far been purely documentary in nature (a single photo against a bright sky). This time, however, it was possible to gather material for a better photo gallery. There were several encounters with the birds, each allowing them to be captured in different lighting conditions and situations.
One could say—half-jokingly—that this time, urban chachalacas were photographed. The pictures were taken at sunrise along a public road. The birds appeared in small groups, usually no larger than ten individuals. After several attempts in various lighting conditions, I was finally able to take some interesting, non-documentary photos.
The presence of these birds in urban areas seems to pose some risks for them. In Mexico, hunting birds is prohibited, but chachalacas are not covered by this ban. Local people are allowed to hunt them for personal use—though not for commercial purposes. However, this does not appear to be a common practice, as the birds showed no fear of humans. In fact, I sometimes had to step back just to fit their entire silhouettes into the frame.
