Alphabetical list

Another representative of honeyeaters. It can be found throughout eastern Australia. I fortuitously managed to photograph it in the Blue Mountains. The adjective “fortuitously” is  used deliberately. The honeyeater was sitting surrounded by lush vegetation and it was hard to find a piece of space not covered with any plant in order to take a photo. But I succeed after a few attempts. There is no sexual dimorphism in this species. Females are slightly smaller. Couples may breed even three times a year.

A few photos of the New Zealand Bellbird have created a gallery on my website and made the bellbird family at tomkalfoto.pl bigger. This, however, doesn’t seem to be the most important thing when I look at the pictures of this bird. When I was photographing in New Zealand I wanted to observe and capture as many endemic species as possible. The New Zealand Bellbird is exactly one of these species which are endemic to New Zealand. These bellbirds reach up to about 20 centimeters in length and about 30 grams in weight.

I don’t know whether I finally managed to capture the beautiful tail of the New Zealand Fantail, which is the bird’s attribute or distinguishing feature, but the bird was very difficult to observe and even more difficult to photograph. It is 16 centimeters long, and half of its length is its decorative tail. When I was on the southern island, in the woods which looked very much like Jurassic park with its tree-ferns and other plants that made it impossible to move through the forest, I photographed the New Zealand Fantail.

This a really beautiful and large pigeon. Its plumage has  so many colours that it is difficult to produce o photography giving justice to its beauty. It is an enormous bird, as it may weigh up to 850 grams. Interestingly enough, the collar dove, which can be easily found in Poland, weighs about 200 grams and is therefore four times as light as the New Zealand pigeon. The bird inhabits both the northern and southern islands of New Zealand. it feeds on fruit and kernels.

Taking such photos of the New Zealand sea lion was possible thanks to using the services of a pleasure boat which took me on a cruise through fjords of New Zealand’s southern Island. Sea lions, which were accustomed to pleasure boats, were basking in the sun not paying any attention to our ship. Males of the sea lion can reach up to 450 kilograms in weight, while the females are much smaller and can weigh up to 165 kilograms. They have been strictly protected as an endangered species since 1890.
