Chestnut-backed Sparrow-Lark

Last minute news-11/12-2022-Botswana

Our usual thinking of the desert as a place with only sand is wrong. Often deserts have sparse low-growing vegetation. For a European, the Kalahari is just associated with a desert landscape. In fact, the landscape there is very diverse. The Kalahari is a basin where in places one could observe an almost strictly desert landscape in another quite lush vegetation. In one such desert place an artificial reservoir with water was built. Of course, all creatures large and small there appeared in the 40-degree heat. From elephants to Chestnut-backed Sparrow-Lark and other small birds. Unfortunately, the presence of elephants made it impossible to reduce the distance to these small birds, but the place itself very interesting. Also, the evening experience of this "camping" will remain in my memory for a long time. After a really hot day, a substitute for a field shower provides a moment of relief from the heat. My high ankle boots, I then swapped for flip-flops, by the time I had completely dried off. We were already sitting by the campfire after dark, when suddenly Kris tells me that something is walking near my leg. Without moving my leg, I reached for the flashlight, I light it, and here a small scorpion. You have to be careful, because even though it is difficult to encounter snakes or scorpions in Botswana, because they are incredibly secretive and shy away from humans, they are there and pose a real threat. The tent must always be tightly closed and shoes checked before putting a foot in. This was the only such close encounter with a "toxic" animal during our entire stay in Botswana.
