Tough object to photograph for high dynamics of its movement. On one hand long telephotos enable close ups and taking a satisfying picture, not to mention the quicker AF, but on the other hand, so what, if often the photographed bird disappears in the frame. Shorter telephoto gives a chance to watch the flying tern easier, but the AF works much slower as the object is smaller and you have to frame it insistently, therefore worsen the quality. There are no ideal solutions…As you can see I managed to take few picture, enough of them to create this gallery. White-winged Terns live in colonies and what’s important they are not particularly skittish. They do not require night steak outs, like other species. If, within dozen or so meters distance, we sit and cover ourselves with at least a masking net, terns will accept us and keep on behaving naturally. After 20 minutes one of the terns sat so close to the lense that you couldn’t focus and take an “anatomical” picture. To follow fast moving terns is quite a blind man’s bluff. Luckily, every now and then they suspend above water surface and seek their prey. Unfortunately, so high that you have an offsetting sky, so the least attractive of options. They rarely came down enough to have a green behind their backs. Terns are a beautiful object to photograph, especially in their mating apparel. You need to have sufficient time and patience to choose, among thousands of shots of flying terns, the ones worthy of presenting them. White-winged Tern weighs around 60 grams with a wingspan of around 60 centimeters.
