Sad but true, one cannot succeed in everything. Although Johan and I saw the short-eared owl three times, we failed to take one good picture of this bird. I’ve added a few documentary photos in the start-up gallery, rather as a memento of my first encounter with this species and for the reason that it’s the only predator in Iceland which I managed to see and photograph. I also saw some white-tailed eagles’ nests but the distance was so large that even with the use of converters I managed to take some very poor quality, documentary pictures. In Iceland, as in Poland there are protection zones for white-tailed eagles’ nests, so the observations were carried out from a public road. Besides, it’s a species that has a quite some gallery on my website although a white-tailed eagle’s nest on the ground, on rocks would be an interesting observation…
Last minute news – 06/2015
Current documentary display has been supplemented with new photos, although they are also of documentary quality but much better and undoubtedly with more interesting take. So we have progress, but still I have to work on the right capturing of this bird. It was quite cloudy, the distance from owls was large, at least so large that despite working with 600 mm lens and 1.4x converter a significant cropping was needed.
Last minute news -06/2018 Iceland
Also this time I encountered a short-eared owl three times in Iceland, each time it was spotted at first from the public road. But one of those meetings was special. It changed my gallery, documentary so far. We could observe how the owl behaved, which hunted in this area - let's say - around us. On other occasions it could be seen for a moment and we could only watch it from a distance, amazed how large is the area it hunts across. Alex, this time you noticed this owl, thank you and best regards. In the other two cases, although we were looking for the bird patiently, it did not make a full circle and did not come back to appear in front of our cameras lenses. It was a good hunter, as during this successful photo session we saw two effective hunts. Unfortunately, it was always a bit too far, though once it was so interested in us that flew just above our heads. The owl sat on the roadside fence posts from where observed the area and started the next hunt. When flying it was always accompanied by other birds - its potential prey. They were probably assuming that it was better to control the threat at close range than to be startled and end up as its meal. Terns, redshanks and redwings assisted the owl in flight. Finally, I took a few interesting photos and the previous documentary gallery of this beautiful bird fell into oblivion. My impressions after this meeting will be long remembered, and the short-eared owl goes to the news.

Encountering an owl is always an exciting event worth capturing. Although I didn't manage to take many photos this time, they must be added to the gallery. You never know when the next opportunity to meet a Short-eared owl will come—my last encounter was over six years ago.
