The Red-breasted Merganser’s gallery was created during the winter expedition in the area of Bay of Puck (13`). Mergansers occurred quite frequently in the area of Jastarnia. Despite the strong wind in the morning, lighting conditions were conducive to taking good pictures. Unfortunately mergansers were at quite long distance from the coast and most of images are framed considerably. That’s a pity as among the flock mating behavior could be seen. Wide open beaks, raised high heads of several males at once, if the distance was shorter such snap would give an impressive effect. Nevertheless, observing them in the rays of the rising sun certainly goes deep into memory. Just like especially for me, one of the males flew in front of the lens at a much shorter distance and luckily I managed to take a picture of the flying merganser. Nesting of those birds in Poland is very unusual. They live north of our country, in Siberia and Canada. They are seen more often in passing, and this is our country where mating take place. Then mergansers having been matched pairs in March, April flew off to their breeding grounds. It is interesting that a year ago in the same vicinity I photographed common mergansers and failed to photograph a single red-breasted merganser. This year almost the opposite. Occasionally could be seen common mergansers. Weight of red-breasted merganser does not exceed 1.5 kilogram with a wingspan of about 80 centimeters. Especially beautiful is the males coloration. Let's hope the representatives of this species will allow to take pictures from a much shorter distance and the gallery will change radically. But for now, I invite you to the "opening" red-breasted merganser’s gallery on my website.

Previous pictures of red-breasted mergansers in my gallery were framed to a significant extent because of a quite a large distance from which they were taken. In Iceland I managed to take some photos, which are static but taken from a distance close enough to introduce some tints of variety and novelty to the previous gallery. Nevertheless red-breasted mergansers were quite skittish and whenever I tried to reduce the distance between us, they would fly away.

Just like with snow buntings, after my visit on the Hel Peninsula in March 2016 there were radical qualitative changes in the red-breasted merganser gallery on my website. It was used as an excuse to rebuild this rather overloaded with documentary photos exhibition.
